Statement on Islamophobia and Violent Attacks on Muslim Women in Edmonton

I strongly condemn all incidents of Islamophobia in Edmonton and surrounding areas, including the most recent attack in St. Albert. My heart breaks for the victims, their families and the wider community.

I strongly condemn all incidents of Islamophobia in Edmonton and surrounding areas, including the most recent attack in St. Albert. My heart breaks for the victims, their families and the wider community.

Racist hate-motivated attacks against any individual are against Canadian values and must stop immediately. Every individual, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, or race deserve to feel safe and protected in our country.

Our diversity makes our communities stronger and I will continue to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community in Edmonton and across the country and against Islamophobia and hatred.

The NDP have been fighting for protection for Muslims in Canada for a very long time. Recently, we passed a motion in the House of Commons calling for a National Action Summit on Islamophobia to urgently address the threat of Islamophobia in this country. The Federal Government must take immediate action to protect Canadian Muslims and fight against Islamophobia and all forms of racism and discrimination. This includes fulfilling our call for a National Summit on Islamophobia and passing online anti-hate legislation to remove hateful and extremist content from social media platforms to which continues to perpetuate violence and hate in our communities.

It is time to take real meaningful action to stop Islamophobia.
