Statement on Entry Into Force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)

MP Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) made the following statement:

Today, myself and members of the Liberal Party, Green Party, Bloc Quebecois and members of The Senate, came together to mark the historic Entry Into Force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

This treaty, which comes into effect on Friday, prohibits under any circumstances, the development, production, testing, manufacture, acquisition, stockpiling, transfer, use or threat of use of nuclear weapons or other nuclear devices. It has been endorsed by 122 States in the UN General Assembly.

I am delighted to be involved in this historic step against the creation and use of nuclear weapons. This is an important issue that parliamentarians on all sides have come together to fight against. There is no place for the nuclear weapons in the world.
