NDP Statement on Pride Month

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“On behalf of all New Democrats, I want to wish you a happy Pride Month. Everyone should be free to love who they love and New Democrats will continue to fight alongside the SOGIE for full equality.

The SOGIE community deserves elected leaders who listen to them and take action to make sure they are safe here at home and around the world. Together we can work to make our country a fairer, better place to live.

LGBTQ2+ organizations are doing important work and they need the government to have their backs with adequate funding. These organizations provide important services, education and outreach in our communities. Small organizations, especially those that serve racialized, Indigenous and rural and remote populations, need and deserve the government’s help.

We all have a role to play in calling out discrimination and homophobia wherever we see it. That’s why we need to ban conversion therapy in Canada. This practice has hurt so many members of the SOGIE community and the government must stop this immediately. Canadians also expect the government to end the ban on blood donations from gay men. This discrimination is wrong, and the government has to stop it.

Sadly, there are still a lot of places around the world where it is illegal to be openly LGBTQ2+ and many more places where it is dangerous. We can do our part to help by creating a clear path to safety for LGBTQ2+ Refugees.

This Pride Month, New Democrats are recommitting to building a future where all people can live free of discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia.

Happy Pride!”
